Annual event on early Chinese alums will be a “workshop within a play”

The annual spring “Chinese Badgers/Badgers in China” student workshop will include profiles of four notable alum whose careers in China and education in the early 1900s in Madison exemplified the Wisconsin Idea. The 2026 event will also feature an unusual twist: an original screenplay written by Andrew Liu (UW Class of 2024, History) that will connect a 19th-century Chinese debate about the value of student exchanges with the stories of path-breaking Badgers.

“Chinese Badgers/Badgers in China” will be held Tuesday, April 7, starting at 4:30 pm in Memorial Library’s Room 126 (located on the main floor closest to the Langdon Street entrance).

The spring student workshop, which dates to 2023, is an annual collaboration between the Center for East Asian StudiesWisconsin China Resource and UW Madison Libraries’ East Asian Studies Librarian Anlin Yang. The workshop program is designed both to showcase the rich history of early UW-Madison connections with China, and to offer current students opportunities for research and presentations.
