The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) kicked off the Year of the Horse with a presentation Tuesday, Feb 17, at Atmus Filtration Technologies and Cummins offices in Stoughton, Wisc.
CEAS project assistants Jimin Gim (Sociology doctoral student) and Andrew Liu (History, Class of 2023) offered comments to an audience of about 70 employees (from both Atmus and Cummins, which share space in the Stoughton facility) on how the Lunar New Year is celebrated in Korea and China. The speakers, who are both international students at UW-Madison, discussed the 12 animals associated with the holiday, and stressed the annual celebration’s emphasis on family gatherings and sharing “wishes for good luck, health, and success.” They also noted such regional differences as the “vastly red” color preference in China for all things associated with the Lunar New Year, as compared to a Korean emphasis on the harmony of many colors.
The Year of the Horse started in 2026 with the new moon on February 17 and will conclude Feb. 5, 2027.
The CEAS presentation was jointly hosted by the two companies, which both seek to foster awareness and communication across cultures for their employees. Atmus is a global leader in filtration and media solutions, while Cummins is a global power leader offering a broad portfolio of products including advanced diesel, natural gas, electric and hybrid powertrains and powertrain-related components.
