CEAS FLAS Recipients

The U.S. Department of Education’s Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships program offers tuition funding and stipends for qualified students focused on world language and area studies competencies. CEAS is certified to offer FLAS awards for the study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan, with separate competitions for summer language intensives and academic year studies. Competitions typically open in late November, with a February 14 application deadline. See the FLAS website, flas.wisc.edu, for more information.

“The FLAS award helped me progress in Japanese by allowing me to take a whole summer to just focus on the language and not be distracted by other courses.” — Elaina

“Because the FLAS is so flexible, I was able to select a program that fit my language learning needs at the time of the award.” — Austin

“The FLAS award I received game me experience relevant to both of my majors, Chinese and Political Science, leading to me working at Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office in DC as a foreign policy-focused intern after my Beijing program.” — Jacob
