2021 AAR Book Awards includes work by UW-Madison Art Historian

“Becoming Guanyin: Artistic Devotion of Buddhist Women in Late Imperial China” by UW-Madison Art History Professor Yuhang Li was among the recipients of this year’s American Academy of Religion “Religion and the Arts Book Award.” The competition recognizes new scholarly publications that make significant contributions to the study of religion. The awards honor books of distinctive originality, intelligence, and creativity, and these titles affect decisively how religion is examined, understood, and interpreted.

Professor Li’s book, published by Columbia University Press, was commended for providing “an unparalleled and badly needed authoritative study on one of the most important figures in Chinese myth and religious practice, particularly with respect to women’s experience in late imperial China.”
