The Center for East Asian Studies was among the eight area and international studies centers at UW-Madison to receive federal “Title VI” grants for the 2018-2022 cycle under the National Resource Centers (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships programs, administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The funding will allow the center to offer annual summer and academic year FLAS fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students studying Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan beyond the first-year level. FLAS fellowships cover tuition and offer stipends to recipients. NRC status means the center will have funding to invite guest lecturers, hold conferences, and build a greater capacity for high-quality research and training to help teachers, students and professionals engage with a globalized East Asia.
