What the Qing Empire Can Teach us about Capitalism and its Global History

Abstract:

Assistant Professor Stacie Kent, Boston College, spoke on Qing governance and economic systems in relation to the global history of capital. She related the critical theory of Marx’s infamous Capital to how the Qing system of goods operated, social reproduction rather than accumulation. This system worked until the British-led Unequal Treaties demanded systems of trade that prized accumulation and speed-up over social good.
