CEAS 2021 Undergraduate Paper Winners

The Center for East Asian Studies was one of eight area studies centers participating in the third annual Area and International Studies Undergraduate Paper Award. Contest entries were all papers submitted to fulfill a UW-Madison course or thesis requirement during the 2020-2021 academic year (Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 terms), and addressed issues related to East Asia.

The 2021 winners for the CEAS competition are as follows:

Top Prize:

  • Tyler Katzenberger & Charlie Lyne, for “How China Is Modernizing Without Democracy.” Written for Political Science 182: Politics Around The World (Honors), taught by Yoshiko Herrera.

Two Second Place Awards:

  • Anitha Quintin, for “The Hearts and Minds of Japan’s Colonies.” Written for EA Studies 255: Introduction to East Asian Civilizations taught by Viren Murthy.
  • Juilin Lu, for “Land Reform Policies in Postwar Taiwan.” Written for Political Science 400 Introduction to Chinese Politics taught by Reed Lei.

Three Honorable Mention Awards:

  • Manola Inthavong, for “How an Actress Turned Politician’s Story Reveals Sexist Inequities in Japanese Politics.” Written for EA Studies 255: Introduction to East Asian Civilizations taught by Viren Murthy.
  • Nils Peterson, for “A Question of Law: 1920s and 1930s Chinese Legal Discourse under the Guomindang.” Written for History 341: History of Modern China, 1800-1949, taught by Judd Kinzley.
  • Taylor Leigh Scofield, for “The Digital History of Tokyo Blog” Created for History 200: Digital History of Tokyo, 1868-2021, taught by Jeffrey Guarneri.
