Richard Miller received his M.M. and Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the Music Department here at the UW-Madison with a focus on the history of Korean and Japanese music, and also has a B.A. in Asian Studies from UW-Madison with a focus on the history of Japanese colonialism in Korea. Richard teaches the following courses:
- Introduction to East Asian Civilization
- Contemporary East Asian Societies
- Understanding 21st Century China
- Murder, Mayhem, Modernity: East Asian Crime Fiction
- Global Asian Popular Culture
- Teaching About East Asia (semester-long curriculum development workshop for K-16 teachers)
Richard conducts research on the history of Asian popular music from the standpoint of mestizaje theory, and on issues related to providing East Asian expertise to the field of teacher education. He also chairs the CEAS Library Committee, is a member of the CEAS Steering Committee, the Wisconsin China Initiative Steering Committee, the International Academic Programs Faculty Advisory Committee for Greater China Study Abroad, and the International Institute Academic Planning Committee.
